Hello, my friend and I are trying to start a small business. We have a name in mind, but what is the best and most cost-effective way to make it ours? If it makes a difference, we're in New Hampshire. This is our first year, and I don't think we'll make enough to have to file taxes for the business this year, but I'm hoping to have it all figured out by next year.

Your brand is your company's identity, so it's critical to secure it with a trademark, which prevents someone from improperly using your business name or branding. To get a trademark, you'll need to file an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
